Bioinformatics
On Wednesday, May 30, 2007, Dr. Kim Gernet, Director of the Molecular Modelling Center Biomolecular Computing Resource at Emory, talked to the group about the field of bioinformatics—what it is, what tools are available, and what researchers can do with those tools.

The Value of Medical Publications in the New Millennium
On Saturday, March 10, 2007, Sheldon B. Cohen, MD, discussed the value of medical journals and the future of medical publishing from the perspective of a physician who writes and edits. He solicited input from the audience, making the presentation as interactive as possible. Dr. Cohen is a medical writer and editor and practicing psychiatrist in Atlanta, with a specialty in forensic psychiatry. He is also a former professor, former editor of the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, and a past president of AMWA Southeast.

Health Literacy
Health Literacy was the topic of the local chapter meeting held Wednesday, January 31, 2007. Ruth M. Parker, MD, spoke to the group about the important issue of health literacy. Dr. Parker is a Professor of Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine and is also on the faculty at the School of Public Health in the Division of Epidemiology. Her research has focused on medical education and health services of underserved populations. Dr. Parker has written extensively on the topic of health literacy. She has received national recognition for her work, including the Walter C. Alvarez award from AMWA.

American Cancer Society Cohorts: 100-Year History 1950-2050
At the local chapter meeting held on Wednesday, November 8, 2006, Dr. Jeanne Calle discussed studies in cancer prevention. Dr. Calle currently serves as the Director of Analytical Epidemiology at the American Cancer Society.

BELS Examination and AMWA Educational and Professional Development Certificates
At the local chapter meeting held on September 9, 2006, Leslie Neistadt discussed what to expect from the BELS Examination. Emma Hitt and Mindy Tanzola presented information on AMWA’s educational program and Professional Development certificate.
Leslie Neistadt is the current BELS registrar, and also heads up a roundtable discussion on the BELS examination at the annual AMWA conference. Emma Hitt is the current President of the Southeast chapter of AMWA and has been active in AMWA’s educational program, including sitting in on discussions of the Board of Directors regarding AMWA’s educational program. Mindy Tanzola, the Southeast Chapter’s current President-Elect, has been awarded her Professional Development certificate and was happy to discuss her experience with this remarkable new certification program.
